Holly’s best friend hosted a surprise 50th birthday party for her over at Ecco in Midtown. Holly’s favorite color is orange so we made sure the cake was as orange as it could be!
Top tier flavor: carrot cake with cream cheese icing
Bottom tier flavor: vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream
To begin, made Holly’s name plaque in advance and dried it on a 6″ round dummy. Why not on a flat surface? So that it would hug the curve of the cake!
I iced the outside of both tiers in orange colored buttercream. The pattern on the bottom was achieved using a Moroccan lace mat and cake lace. Y’all…it took me 5 tries to get it right. I was ready to pull my hair out when I realized the oven was too hot. We’d been baking cakes before I put the lace in, and I totally didn’t give the oven any time to cool off. Let’s just say I won’t make that frustrating mistake again.
I let the lace cool just a bit and attached it to the cake using a bit of clear piping gel. I piped a border using tip #12 around the bottom of each tier. The final step was topping the cake with several orange Gerber daisies that I found at Whole Foods.
