In September of 2018, I dipped my toe into making prop cakes for TV/movies. The film industry is booming here in Atlanta and this was a cool way for me to be a part of it.
The first go-round I made 4 real cakes and 1 dummy cake for a Netflix series called Raising Dion. I didn’t really know anything about the scenes except that there were two kids in the car and they were going to dig into the cake. The most important part of prop cakes is that they have to look the exact same, otherwise there will be a continuity error in the scene.
In December of 2018, they were filming the actual party scene that involved the cake, and they asked me to make 4 more real cakes and 1 more dummy cake. I knew they’d need these at some point, so I took a ton of photos and measurements after the first round to ensure everything would look the same for the second round of cakes.
Here’s a photo of one of the cakes from December of last year:
Because the show wasn’t out yet, I had to wait until it aired before I could post anything.
You can see the cake in action in episode 5 of Raising Dion on Netflix! Check it out!
Stay tuned because I have another post similar to this that I should be able to publish some time in early 2020!
