Right after I made the dinosaur test cakes for Netflix’s Raising Dion, I got a call from a prop master asking about a cake for a baby shower scene in a movie.
I can’t remember the exact conversation we had, but it went something like this:
Her: It’s for a baby shower scene.
Me: That’s not a problem!
Her: It’s kind of weird. We want a cake that looks like a baby head coming out of a vagina. And the director wants it to be gross.
Me: Ok…well, we all have differing “levels of gross” so how about you find a couple of photos online, and let me take a look.
I let her know that what she wanted was do-able so we planned a little in-person meeting at the shop to discuss the specifics.
Because the script was already written, I needed to include chocolate sprinkles, a Rolo, and maybe some chocolate cotton candy.
I made a test cake for the director and this is what I sent him:
On the left, we have chocolate sprinkle pubes and cotton candy pubes on the right. Cotton candy can be difficult to work with and it didn’t provide the look we were going for.
We made some tweaks to the design and tentatively planned on delivering the cakes in early December 2018. Because of weather and other circumstances, movie schedules can be moved up or back. This one went right on track! (And if you’re paying close attention to these blog posts, yes I had to make all the Dinos and the vagina cakes in the same week. On top of all my other orders. I’m not complaining, just pointing out that us cake people have deadlines and sometimes we don’t sleep.)
We decreased the size of the cake, added more “blood,” and chose the sprinkles over the cotton candy,
Leading up to the due date (haha get it?!), I got a call from the prop master. She said the film would be set in Atlanta and they had a scene where a van would pull up to deliver the cake. She offered to have my delivery vehicle in the scene, but I was driving a regular Chevrolet Equinox, and nothing special. She asked for my logo and said they might be able to use it.
I made six of these cakes (5 real and 1 dummy), loaded them up and delivered to the set.
There were a ton of people around this giant mansion, and as I pulled around the corner I saw a white van with my logo on it!!! I. Was. Freaking. Out.
She sent me a text the next day saying the ladies were ad-libbing on set and the scene was becoming more and more hilarious. At this point, they were still filming the movie under a working title, so I had no idea how to keep tabs on when it would be hitting theaters.
Fast forward to January 2020 as I’m casually scrolling through Instagram. I follow Tiffany Haddish because she’s hilarious and I saw she posted a trailer for her new movie “Like A Boss” — and I see this:
THAT’S MY CAKE! IN A FREAKIN’ MOVIE TRAILER!!!
I haven’t had time to go see the movie yet, but I can’t wait to see it on the big screen and find out if the van with my logo made it into the final cut!
Have you seen it? What did you think?
